The math

    Peak sun hours by state

A peak sun hour is one hour of sunlight at 1,000 watts per square meter, so kWh per square meter per day reads directly as hours. These are from the PVWatts v8 API for the largest city in each state, on a fixed panel facing south and tilted at the city's latitude. A panel lying flat or propped at a steep angle in winter will see a different number. Download all 12 months as CSV.
